Author bio

Peggy Henderson was born and raised in Germany, long before her family immigrated to the United States. Even as a kid, she was drawn to the American West through dubbed episodes of Little House, Gunsmoke, and Bonanza, and through the western adventure novels of Karl May. That early fascination never really left.

Animals came first, though.

As a teenager in the U.S., Henderson's first job was in the boarding kennel of an animal hospital. She worked her way up to technician and stayed in the field through high school and college. She studied Animal Science and pre-veterinary medicine for four years, and for a long time becoming a veterinarian was the plan.

Life changed that plan. She has said that burnout from school, marriage, and starting a family pulled her away from the vet-school road, even though she kept working around animals. Later, after spending her children's early years at home, her background helped her land a job in a veterinary reference lab. That practical, animal-heavy experience shows up all through her fiction, especially in the horse care, ranch work, and wilderness details.

Writing came later, almost by accident. A story stayed stuck in her head for close to a year, and eventually she decided to try putting it on the page herself. Henderson had long been an avid romance reader, but turning that private interest into a finished manuscript was, by her own account, a long and difficult climb.

The book that started it all was Yellowstone Heart Song in 2012. From there she built out the Yellowstone books into a family-centered time travel saga, then branched into the Teton novels, the Blemished Brides and Wilderness Brides books, and contemporary western stories like Shane's Burden and Mason's Rescue. Readers who stick with her tend to come for the mountain settings and time-slip hooks, then stay for the steady, earnest relationships and the sense that the land matters as much as the romance.

She writes a lot about people who are lonely, bruised, or carrying more guilt than they know what to do with.

And she almost always gives them a hard country to cross before they can be happy.

That makes sense when you look at her interests off the page. Henderson has long loved hiking, camping, horseback riding, and painting, and she once sold pet portraits professionally. In 2016, she and her husband, her high school sweetheart, moved to Yellowstone for what she described as a once-in-a-lifetime job opportunity in the park. She got to spend a year living in Yellowstone's interior, which gave her a firsthand feel for the place she had already been writing about for years.

These days she lives just outside Yellowstone's boundaries and keeps busy with a small hobby farm. She has written about raising chickens, ducks, and turkeys, growing a vegetable garden, and baking sourdough, which feels very on brand for someone whose books are full of capable people making a life with their own hands. It also fits the other constant in her life, animals. Over the years she has had horses, cats, dogs, birds, reptiles, and more rescues than she can probably count.

If you are new to her work, Yellowstone Heart Song is still the clearest doorway in. After that, Yellowstone Redemption, Teton Sunrise, In His Eyes, and Cora's Pride give a good sense of her range. Henderson's fiction is western romance at heart, but it is also about home, survival, and what happens when people finally get the courage to choose a different life.
