Christmas in Peachtree Bluff

by Kristy Woodson Harvey

2021

Series background & context

Set in the fictional seaside town of Peachtree Bluff, Georgia, this series follows designer and widowed mother Ansley Murphy and her three grown daughters as they circle back to one another when life falls apart. The books blend multi generational family drama with front porch gossip, salt air, and plenty of small town charm.

Years before the series opens, Ansley loses her husband in a tragedy and discovers he has left her with far less security than she expected. She moves her young daughters into her grandmother's old beach house, slowly builds a waterfront design business, and makes a life for them on the coast. By the time Slightly South of Simple begins, the girls are adults scattered across the country, and Ansley's quiet routines are upended when eldest daughter Caroline returns home pregnant after a very public breakup in New York.

Caroline's arrival is only the beginning. Middle sister Sloane, whose military husband is deployed overseas, and youngest sister Emerson, an actress on the rise, soon drift back to Peachtree Bluff with their own private worries. Old friends, first loves, and a long buried secret from Ansley's past all resurface, forcing the Murphy women to face what really happened in the years after their father's death.

In The Secret to Southern Charm, the focus shifts to Sloane as she learns that her husband is missing in action and tumbles into paralyzing grief. Ansley puts her personal life on hold to help care for Sloane and her grandsons, even as she fears that choices she made decades earlier are about to be exposed. Caroline and Emerson push their sister to keep going, and the novel digs into how a close family navigates fear, loyalty, and the possibility of hope returning.

The Southern Side of Paradise brings Emerson to the center as she juggles an engagement, a career making role, and nagging doubts she cannot quite name. Two new women arrive in town, one tied to Ansley's future and one to Emerson's past, and their presence sets off a chain of revelations. The bond between mother and daughters is tested as secrets come to light and each Murphy woman has to decide what she is willing to risk for the life she wants.

The holiday installment, Christmas in Peachtree Bluff, revisits the family a little later, with the next generation of Murphy girls coming into their own. When a powerful hurricane threatens the town just as Christmas approaches, teenage Vivi's rebellion and Ansley's plans collide with rising water and closed bridges, sending the sisters on a risky trip back home. Across all four novels, readers can expect cozy coastal scenes, moments of laugh out loud sister banter, serious emotional stakes, and a through line of forgiveness that keeps drawing this messy, loving family together.
