Series background & context

The Paw Enforcement books pair Fort Worth police officer Megan Luz with one of the best crime-fighting partners in Diane Kelly's fiction, a headstrong police dog named Brigit. Megan does not exactly ease into this partnership. She starts the series already in trouble at work, and being assigned a K-9 feels less like a reward than a test. That is what makes the opening so fun. Megan has to learn how to work with a partner who cannot talk, does not care about office politics, and is often the smartest presence in the room.

Brigit is not window dressing. She is central to the whole series. Her training, instincts, and occasional stubborn streak drive both the investigations and the comedy. Megan may carry the badge and write the reports, but Brigit has a way of cutting straight through nonsense. Their bond deepens as the books go on, and that partnership becomes the heart of the series.

The cases are more action-forward than many cozies. Bomb threats, gang activity, drugs, stalking, cult secrets, abandoned babies, false active-shooter calls, and arson all show up across the books. Megan spends plenty of time on the street, and the stories have a clear law-enforcement feel even when the tone stays playful. Diane Kelly's police academy background helps here. The world feels grounded without getting too heavy.

Fort Worth gives the series its flavor. Megan and Brigit move through rodeos, neighborhoods, campuses, storms, malls, and back roads, with the city always feeling lived in rather than just pasted on as scenery. There is also an ongoing romantic thread involving Seth Rutledge, who works in emergency services and fits naturally into Megan's high-stress world. Their relationship adds warmth without slowing the pace.

These books are funny, but the humor usually comes from character rather than gimmicks. Megan is impulsive, loyal, and often one wisecrack away from trouble. Brigit steals scenes simply by being Brigit. Together they make a team that can handle real danger and still leave room for laughter, flirtation, and the occasional bit of chaos.

Readers who want a cozy mystery with more sirens, more chase scenes, and a very memorable dog should feel right at home here. The mysteries are readable on their own, but the emotional payoff grows if you follow Megan, Brigit, and Seth from the beginning. Start with Paw Enforcement if you want the full arc of one of Diane Kelly's most entertaining partnerships.
