Paula Daly Books in Order

Paula Daly was born in Lancashire and came to fiction by a route that was far less tidy than the usual writer story. Before novels took over, she worked as a self-employed physiotherapist, and that practical, close-up view of stress, bodies, family life, and everyday strain still shows in her books.

She did not come to writing through academia or publishing.

Daly has said that when she started, she had not studied English since she was sixteen and was not even sure she punctuated dialogue correctly. The turning point came when a friend urged her to read Stephen King’s On Writing. She finished it, started writing the very next day, and soon moved from short stories to a full novel draft, fitting the work around family life.

That first manuscript was enough to attract an agent, but not enough to be published. Daly kept going, learned the craft as she went, and eventually found the premise and character motivation that made Just What Kind of Mother Are You? work. Once the revised novel went out to publishers, it sold in just over a week.

That debut changed everything.

From the start, readers responded to the way Daly takes ordinary lives and gives them one hard shove. Just What Kind of Mother Are You? opens with every parent’s nightmare, a child going missing on another woman’s watch. Keep Your Friends Close turns friendship, marriage, and status anxiety into something much more dangerous. The Mistake I Made traps a struggling single mother inside one desperate decision and follows the fallout.

A lot of Daly’s fiction circles the same pressure points. She has spoken about how hard it is for working women, especially mothers, to feel they must do everything perfectly, and that idea runs through her books. In The Trophy Child, she digs into ambition, control, and the damage done by a parent chasing perfection. In Open Your Eyes, a brutal attack on a successful crime writer forces his wife to confront debts, secrets, and the parts of her marriage she has chosen not to see. In Clear My Name, she shifts into a more investigative mode, following a woman trying to prove that a convicted prisoner may be innocent.

Place matters in Daly’s work too. She has said she writes about the Lake District because she loves it, and because it gives thrillers something extra: an enclosed setting, strong social pressures, and very rich people living right next to very poor ones. That helps explain why her novels feel both beautiful and claustrophobic. Keep Your Friends Close was shortlisted for the 2014 CWA Gold Dagger, and her books later fed into the ITV drama Deep Water.

She now lives in Cumbria with her husband, three children, and a whippet called Skippy. She also spent a short time living in France before returning to the UK. It suits her that way, because her fiction is full of people trying to keep ordinary life moving, right up until ordinary life stops cooperating.
