Author bio

Paul Doherty was born in Middlesbrough in 1946, and he grew up in the North East of England. Long before he became known for historical mysteries, he was the kid who liked stories, and the student who kept digging into what really happened.

As a young man he spent time studying for the Catholic priesthood at Ushaw College in Durham. After three years he changed direction, studied history at the University of Liverpool, and graduated with first class honours. A scholarship then took him to Exeter College, Oxford, where he continued his academic work and later completed doctoral research on the reign of Edward II.

Oxford is also where he met Carla Lynn Corbitt, who became his wife. Together they raised seven children. Carla died in 2016.

Doherty’s day job was education. He taught in secondary schools, then in 1981 became headteacher of Trinity Catholic High School in Woodford Green, on the edge of London and Essex. In 2011 he was appointed OBE for services to education.

He never really stopped being a teacher.

While running a busy school, he built a second life as a writer, often working early mornings or late at night. He has published a huge body of work, and he has used several pen names along the way, including P.C. Doherty, Paul Harding, Michael Clynes, C.L. Grace, Ann Dukthas, Anna Apostolou, and Vanessa Alexander. Those names let him write in different moods and periods, and sometimes helped keep long-running series distinct.

If you’ve read Satan in St Mary's or The Nightingale Gallery, you’ve seen the core Doherty approach: a tight mystery, a vivid historical setting, and a steady drip of political pressure. He’s also taken readers to Ancient Egypt in books like The Mask of Ra, to imperial Rome in Murder Imperial, and into late medieval power struggles with Dark Queen Rising. Readers who stick with him tend to like the mix of puzzle-solving and real history, plus the sense that danger can come from the street, the court, or the church.

His books like to start with a body and end with history feeling close enough to touch.

Across his fiction, a few themes repeat. Power is always contested, faith can be sincere or weaponized, and rumor travels faster than truth. He’s just as interested in guilds, taverns, and parish life as he is in palaces, which is part of why his medieval settings feel lived-in rather than decorative.

He has also written nonfiction that revisits famous historical questions and contested deaths, including The Great Crown Jewels Robbery of 1303, Isabella and the Strange Death of Edward II, The Secret Life of Elizabeth I, The Mysterious Death Of Tutankhamun / The Secret History of Tutankhamun, and The Death of the Red King. His work has been widely translated, and he has been recognized within the historical mystery community with lifetime achievement honors.

Even after decades in education and an enormous bibliography, the engine of his writing is still curiosity, what happened, who benefited, and what people were willing to do to keep their secrets.
