Patrice Caldwell Books in Order

Patrice Caldwell grew up in Fort Worth, Texas, with a love of stories that could open up entirely new worlds. A family friend gave her Octavia E. Butler's Wild Seed when she was fourteen, and the experience stuck with her. She wanted books where Black characters could have magic, adventure, romance, and futures that were bigger than the narrow roles often offered to them.

That question, where is the fantasy and future for people like me, has stayed close to her work.

Caldwell studied at Wellesley College, then built a career in children's publishing. She worked as an editor before moving into literary representation, giving her a close view of how books are made, bought, and brought to readers. It also made the gaps in the industry hard to ignore.

In 2017, she founded People of Color in Publishing, a grassroots organization created to support racially and ethnically marginalized people working across the book business. The group has helped create space for connection, career guidance, and frank conversations about who gets hired, promoted, and published.

She has always been interested in making the door wider.

Her 2020 anthology, A Phoenix First Must Burn, brought together sixteen speculative stories centered on Black girls and gender-nonconforming teens. The book moves through fantasy, science fiction, folktales, and magical realism, with characters who are witches, rebels, scientists, sisters, and survivors. Caldwell also contributed a story herself, but her role as editor was central: she assembled a collection built around Black joy, resistance, imagination, and hope.

The anthology won the Ignyte Award for Outstanding Anthology or Collected Works.

Caldwell later appeared in That Way Madness Lies, a collection of modern YA takes on Shakespeare, contributing a story inspired by Hamlet. With Eternally Yours, she returned to editing, gathering fifteen paranormal romances about mortals, monsters, and the strange ways love can change a life. Vampires, angels, demons, merpeople, and figures from myth all have a place there, along with queer and straight romances.

Those projects show a clear thread in her reading life: she likes genre stories with room for emotion. Her books and editorial work make space for longing, fear, grief, friendship, identity, and the chance to choose your own future. The supernatural is never just decoration. It gives characters a way to confront the pressures around them and imagine something different.

In 2025, Caldwell published her debut novel, Where Shadows Meet. It is a young adult vampire fantasy set in a world shaped by old conflict between gods, humans, and vampires. The story follows a vampire princess and a seer pulled toward the island of the dead, where questions of fate, duty, loss, and love become impossible to avoid.

Her publishing career has taken her from editorial work to agenting and writing. After years in New York City, she returned to the Dallas-Fort Worth area of Texas. In 2025, she launched The Caldwell Agency, and she lives there with three cats and, by her own account, a great many books.
