Series background & context
Patience Price, Counselor at Large is one of Julie Anne Lindsey's earlier mystery series, and it has a slightly different flavor from her later cozies. The books follow Patience Price, who has been downsized from her human resources job at the FBI and returns to her East Coast island home to open a counseling practice.
That sounds like a reset. Instead, she walks straight into murder.
Patience is not a shop-owner sleuth in the usual cozy mold. She comes to the series with professional experience, curiosity, and a habit of believing she can help straighten out what other people are content to leave alone. That gives the books a nice edge. She wants to do good work and build a new life, but the island keeps serving up suspicious deaths, unjust accusations, and situations that refuse to stay comfortably local.
The setting gives the series much of its charm. Island life means a close community, recurring faces, lingering grudges, and a strong sense that news travels fast. Lindsey uses that well. The books feel intimate, but never too small. There is always the sense that the place itself remembers things.
Readers who enjoy Patience tend to like that she feels capable without being slick. She is smart, stubborn, and emotionally invested, which makes her a good guide through these mysteries. If you want to see Lindsey before the later orchard, beach, and Christmas settings took over, this series is a good earlier stop in her catalog.
