Series background & context

The Part-Time Cowboys books are Marie Johnston's spin-off from The Walker Five, and the title tells you a lot. These are not romances about men who only know ranch life. They have full-time jobs, responsibilities off the land, and then a second shift waiting for them at home. That gives the series a grounded, lived-in feel.

The setting is small-town and western-leaning, but the characters bring different day jobs into the mix. A deputy. A firefighter. A vet. Single parents and neighbors doing their best to keep life moving. The ranch work matters, but so does everything else piled on top of it.

Busy people still fall in love.

Because the books are connected to The Walker Five, the town already feels established. Family opinions, old history, and community gossip all help shape the tension. Johnston uses that well. Her couples are rarely meeting in a vacuum. They are navigating jobs, housing, kids, reputations, and the fact that somebody's sibling or best friend is usually watching from across the yard.

The tone is warm, steamy, and a little less sprawling than some of her bigger family series. If you like modern western romance with practical stakes, fake dating, holiday warmth, and heroes who can put out a fire or mend a fence before dinner, Part-Time Cowboys is a very easy series to sink into.
