Devastated and Devoted is one of Marie Johnston's romantic suspense duets, and it reads like a pressure cooker. The story is built around a woman whose life looks polished from the outside, but is anything but safe. Wealth, status, and beautiful houses do not make things easier here. They mostly give the danger more room to hide.

The central relationship pairs a heroine trying to break free of a damaging marriage with a bodyguard who is prickly, controlled, and clearly carrying secrets of his own. That setup gives the duet its main energy. She needs protection, but she does not know who to trust. He is close enough to matter, but far too closed off to feel safe.

The hero has to decide whether staying detached is actually protecting anyone. That combination gives the duet a nice mix of danger, heat, and emotional unraveling.

If you like your romance with mansions, bodyguards, hidden motives, and a couple that has to survive the plot before they can fully trust each other, this duet is a good pick. It is best treated as one complete story split across two books.
