Series background & context

The Pandora English series is a gothic, tongue-in-cheek take on urban fantasy, where high fashion collides with things that go bump in the night. It is set mostly in New York, but not quite the New York you know.

When the series begins, Pandora is a small-town orphan who dreams of being a writer. An invitation from her mysterious great-aunt Celia draws her to Spektor, a fog-shrouded pocket of Manhattan that does not appear on any map. Celia lives in a crumbling mansion at Number One Addams Avenue, dresses like a glamorous relic from Hollywood's Golden Age and seems oddly ageless beneath the veil she always wears.

By day Pandora is a lowly assistant at a fashion magazine, delivering lattes and surviving office politics. By night she discovers that Spektor is home to ghosts, vampires, necromancers and other supernatural residents who share the city with unsuspecting mortals. A strange family legacy marks her as the seventh daughter of a seventh daughter, someone with rare gifts that carry serious responsibilities.

Each novel throws Pandora into a new mystery that blends runway trends with occult danger. A miracle face cream with a sinister ingredient, a brilliant designer whose knitwear is laced with dark magic, a haunted laboratory hidden inside her own building and an exhibition of an ancient female pharaoh all become entry points to larger battles between the living and the dead.

Along the way she builds an odd but loyal circle. Celia offers sharp advice and lessons in both etiquette and witchcraft. Lieutenant Luke, a charming Civil War soldier who happens to be dead, acts as guide and sometimes love interest. Friends and frenemies from the fashion world bring comic relief and remind Pandora that paychecks and magazine deadlines do not stop just because the apocalypse might be brewing.

The tone stays playful even when the stakes are high. The books lean into campy horror, gothic romance and satirical takes on celebrity culture, but they also touch on grief, chosen family and how a young woman learns to trust her instincts in a world that keeps underestimating her.

Taken together, the Pandora English novels follow an unfolding prophecy about a coming Revolution of the Dead and Pandora's role in stopping it, so the series rewards reading in order: The Blood Countess, The Spider Goddess, The Skeleton Key and The Cobra Queen.
