A miracle face cream with a sinister ingredient, a brilliant designer whose knitwear is laced with dark magic, a haunted laboratory hidden inside her own building and an exhibition of an ancient female pharaoh all become entry points to larger battles between the living and the dead.

Along the way she builds an odd but loyal circle. Celia offers sharp advice and lessons in both etiquette and witchcraft. Lieutenant Luke, a charming Civil War soldier who happens to be dead, acts as guide and sometimes love interest.
