Get Off On The Pain

by Victoria Ashley

2015

Memphis lives for the rush of violence and ink, convinced pain is all he deserves. Meeting Lyric, who sees more than his scars, forces him to confront the night that broke him and decide whether loving her is worth unleashing the darkness he has buried.

Series background & context

The Pain series follows a small, interconnected group of characters who treat hurt like a habit. These are stories about fighters and tattooists who would rather bleed than admit they are lonely, and the women who make that kind of survival strategy impossible to sustain.

Get Off On The Pain introduces Memphis, a heavily inked fighter who has learned to use violence and adrenaline to keep his demons quiet. He lives for the rush of pain, convinced it is the only thing that proves he is still alive. A mistake in his past haunts him so badly that he isolates himself, terrified that if he lets anyone close they will be destroyed by the darkness he carries.

Lyric, the woman who gets past his defenses, is a temptation he does not think he deserves. Being around her drags buried memories to the surface and forces him to question whether he is protecting her or simply protecting himself from being loved. Their relationship is a constant collision of need, fear and the seductive pull of old coping mechanisms.

Something For The Pain shifts the focus to Alex, Memphis’s brother, who has traded the fight ring for a tattoo gun. On the outside he is the most sought-after artist at Ravage Tattoos, a smooth talker who sleeps with clients and then sends them back into their lives a little happier. On the inside he is numb, haunted by the same ghosts and scars that broke him down when he was younger.

When Tripp, a childhood friend he has always cared for, walks back into his life with a boyfriend at her side, Alex’s carefully balanced world tips. Agreeing to move in with Tripp and Lucas seems like a bad idea even before he learns that their relationship is not as straightforward as it looks. An open arrangement, long-buried feelings and one reckless night pull all three into territory that hurts as much as it heals.

Together, the Pain books paint a picture of men who think they deserve punishment more than happiness, and of women who refuse to let them stay stuck there. The tone is dark, foul-mouthed and explicit, but Ashley grounds it in deep emotional arcs about addiction, self-worth and the slow work of forgiveness.

Readers who like their romance gritty, with fighters, tattoos and a lot of complicated history, will find the Pain series delivers exactly that.
