The Paige Northwood series follows a freelance British Sign Language interpreter who repeatedly finds herself close to serious criminal investigations. Paige is not a detective. She is there to help people communicate with police, social workers, and other professionals. But the cases have a way of becoming personal, and Paige is rarely content to stand back when someone needs help.

Paige grew up as the hearing member of a Deaf family, so she knows British Sign Language and has deep ties to the local Deaf community. That position gives the series its main source of tension. She can help bridge conversations that would otherwise be missed, but she also knows many of the people being questioned. Professional boundaries can get very complicated, very quickly.

The first book, The Silent House, begins when the deaf Hunter family wakes to find that one of their young children has been murdered during the night. No one heard an intruder, and there is no simple explanation for what happened. Called in to interpret, Paige recognises the family and discovers that the case touches people close to her. As the investigation widens, the tight links within the community become both useful and dangerous.

In Silent Night, Paige is brought to a snowy woodland after a school trip for Deaf students goes wrong. A teenager is missing, a teacher is dead, and the remaining pupils are holding back what they know. The isolated setting adds urgency, while the story keeps its focus on what happens when adults underestimate young people or mistake silence for a lack of information.

The Silent Suspect opens with a house fire. Paige arrives to help a deaf client, Lukas, whose wife is still inside the burning home. The fire soon proves to be part of a murder, and Lukas seems to know more than he can or will explain. Paige is drawn into the case while trying to work out whether his silence points to guilt, fear, or something else entirely.

These are brisk, contemporary crime novels with a strong amateur-investigator thread. Each book has a complete central mystery, but reading them in order lets Paige's personal life, family connections, and hard-won confidence develop naturally. Expect police interviews, uneasy secrets, and cases where communication matters as much as the physical evidence.
