Author bio

Nell Pattison writes crime and psychological thrillers shaped by her long experience in Deaf education. Her stories often place British Sign Language, interpreting, family ties, and the pressure of close-knit communities at the heart of a mystery.

After studying English at university, Pattison became a teacher and specialised in Deaf education. She has worked with Deaf children and young people in England and Scotland, including students who use British Sign Language. It is practical, people-focused work, and it gave her a close view of the ways language, trust, and access can affect everyday life.

That knowledge became a key part of her fiction.

Pattison has spoken about beginning to lose her hearing in her twenties. Her books do not treat deafness as a shortcut to danger or a puzzle to be solved. Instead, they make room for Deaf characters with their own friendships, arguments, work, family history, and ways of communicating.

Her debut, The Silent House, introduces freelance BSL interpreter Paige Northwood. Paige is called in after a deaf family wakes to a terrible crime, having heard nothing during the night. The book became a USA Today bestseller and set the pattern for the early novels: a sharp crime premise, a case that hits close to home, and a protagonist who knows the people involved well enough to spot what others may miss.

Paige returns in Silent Night, where a school trip turns into a search for a missing teenager and an investigation into a teacher's death. In The Silent Suspect, a house fire leads Paige to a client whose wife was murdered before the flames took hold. These are tense mysteries, but the ongoing thread is Paige herself, a hearing woman raised in a Deaf family who understands both the value and the limits of being the person in the middle of a conversation.

Her work keeps asking who gets heard, who gets believed, and what people leave unsaid.

Pattison also writes standalone thrillers. Hide, also published as Nowhere to Hide, traps a group of people in a wintry nature reserve after a shooting exposes old secrets. Friends Don't Lie follows two women with the same name whose lives become tangled after one is mistaken for the other. Both books lean into isolation, suspicion, and the uneasy feeling that someone knows more than they should.

She lives in North Lincolnshire with her husband and son, while continuing her work in Deaf education. That connection to real communities helps keep her thrillers grounded, even when the danger starts to close in.
