Author bio

Owen Parr was born in Havana, Cuba. After his parents left Cuba in 1959, the family settled in Miami Beach, and that is where he grew up, going to St. Joseph's for elementary school and St. Patrick's for high school. The Miami, Cuba, and Catholic-school threads that show up in his fiction are not borrowed scenery. They come from home.

He did not begin as a novelist.

Parr married at nineteen and first followed a path his father understood well. His father was a civil engineer, and Parr started college aiming for electrical engineering. He spent six years in the engineering department at Florida Power and Light, then branched out during South Florida's building boom with a side business selling to developers.

Business pulled him in fast. He left engineering, moved into real estate full time, and eventually built a company with multiple offices and a real estate school. Then the market turned, interest rates soared, and the business that had looked like a sure thing suddenly was not.

In 1986, just before the 1987 stock market crash, he moved into the financial advice world. He stayed there for decades, working with Wall Street firms and learning the habits, pressure points, and blind spots of money culture from the inside. That experience later became one of the things that makes his fiction feel lived in, especially when he writes about fraud, laundering, insider deals, or power hidden behind respectable titles.

He was writing the whole time.

Parr wrote newsletters, ad copy, articles for trade magazines, and, later, screenplays. In the 1990s he studied screenwriting more seriously and even pitched a screenplay called Due Diligence, the idea that later became Operation Due Diligence. By 2015 he had started publishing fiction in earnest, and he did not stay in one lane for long.

His Alpha Team books, including Operation Due Diligence, Operation Black Swan, and Operation Raven, lean into espionage, covert action, and financial conspiracy. The Joey Mancuso and Father O'Brian novels, beginning with A Murder on Wall Street, brought him into crime fiction with a New York setting, a strong family dynamic, and cases that move from Wall Street to serial killers to old mob wounds. The Jack Ryder books, from The Case of the Dead Russian Spy to Beneath the White Coats, shift to Miami and follow a reluctant investigator with a Wall Street past of his own.

Readers tend to come to Parr for twists, but the recurring draw is the mix of worlds. He likes crime stories where money matters, where institutions can be as dangerous as the obvious villain, and where the people doing the investigating already have some bruises on them. New York, Miami, Cuba, and the worlds around finance and law enforcement turn up again and again.

Parr has remained active in the financial advice field while writing novels, which helps explain why his white-collar details feel grounded. Outside of work, he has described himself as a hobby painter in acrylics and a middle-of-the-road golfer. It is an unusual path into crime fiction, and maybe that is part of the appeal.
