Series background & context

Monique Martin's Out of Time series starts with a great pulpy hook. Professor Simon Cross and his assistant Elizabeth West stumble into time travel and land in 1929 New York with no plan, little money, and no clear way home. What looks like a one-book accident quickly turns into a much bigger story about history, hidden forces, and the people trying very hard not to break the timeline while living inside it.

At the center is the Simon and Elizabeth pairing. Simon is brilliant, cautious, and a little emotionally locked down. Elizabeth is warmer, more practical, and usually better at meeting the world head-on. Their relationship gives the series its backbone. Even when the books are chasing murderers, gangsters, spies, cursed objects, or supernatural threats, the story keeps returning to trust, loyalty, and what it means to build a life together in very unstable circumstances.

The historical settings do a lot of work here. Over the series, the Crosses move through 1906 San Francisco, World War II London, 1933 Hollywood, 1852 Natchez, 1920 Cairo, 1888 London, 1912 England and the Titanic, Revolutionary America, 1900 Paris, and 1950s Los Angeles. The Christmas novellas add their own stops, including 1843 London with Charles Dickens and an 1898 train journey involving Mark Twain. Each period brings its own dangers, rules, and mood.

History is the playground, but mystery is usually the engine.

A big part of the ongoing arc is the Council for Temporal Studies, the secret group that oversees time travel, and the enemies who want that power for themselves. Early books focus on survival and single missions. Later ones widen into conspiracy, timeline sabotage, and a running fight with the Shadow Council. Simon and Elizabeth are joined more and more by Jack Wells, and later by their daughter Charlotte, which gives the series a nice sense of growth. The stakes keep getting larger, but they grow out of the characters rather than replacing them.

In tone, Out of Time sits in a fun middle ground between historical adventure, paranormal mystery, and romance. Some books are tense and dangerous. Some lean into holiday warmth. Most mix banter, action, and a little occult weirdness. You can read individual installments on their own, but this is very much a series that rewards order, because the emotional history matters almost as much as the historical setting. If you like time travel with heart, this is the main place to start with Martin.
