Monique Martin was born in Houston, Texas, but her family soon moved to Southern California. She grew up on both coasts, living in both California and Connecticut, which helps make her fiction feel very comfortable with characters who are pulled between worlds, places, and versions of the past.
She studied at the University of Southern California's film school, where she earned a BFA in Filmic Writing. Before she was publishing novels, she worked in television for several years, then spent time in the family business. That background matters. Her books tend to move with a screenwriter's sense of pace, but they also stay focused on practical details, character rhythms, and scenes that are easy to picture.
Then she turned to fiction full time.
Her best-known work begins with Out of Time, the first book in a long-running series about professor Simon Cross and his assistant Elizabeth West. A pocket watch sends them into the past, and Martin uses that premise to blend romance, mystery, the occult, and historical adventure. Readers who like the series usually respond to the balance: the books move quickly, but the relationship at the center has room to breathe, argue, and change.
She likes big ideas, but she rarely lets them crowd out the people.
You can see that across the rest of her fiction. Jacks Are Wild spins the larger time travel story toward Jack Wells and gives it more of an action and espionage slant. Blaze shifts into young adult historical fantasy, following sixteen-year-old Artemis Schäfer through a monster-filled 1904 London. The Frame leaves time travel behind altogether for a romantic mystery tied to old movies, family trouble, and a murder that refuses to stay buried.
A few themes come up again and again. Martin clearly enjoys the past, not as wallpaper, but as a living place that can trap, tempt, or test her characters. She returns often to questions of loyalty, unfinished business, and the danger of changing one small thing. Even when the stakes are large, as in Timeless: Part One and Timeless: Part Two, there is usually something personal underneath it, a marriage under strain, a friendship being tested, or a family trying to hold together when history starts moving under their feet.
She also seems to enjoy mixing tones. There are gangsters, spies, demons, Christmas missions, cursed objects, and plenty of banter. The books can be tense, funny, romantic, or openly pulpy, sometimes in the same chapter. That range is part of the appeal. If you come to Martin for the time travel, you tend to stay for the chemistry between characters and the way each historical stop feels chosen for story rather than just spectacle.
Martin now works full-time as a freelance writer and novelist. She has also worked on screenplays and other writing projects, including material connected to her father's Air Force memoirs. She lives in Southern California and has shared that home with a Siamese cat named Monkey. It is a small detail, but it fits her books, which often mix high stakes with just enough everyday life to keep things human.
