Series background & context
Out of the Dark is David Weber’s take on an alien invasion that doesn’t go the way the invaders planned. The opening is pure crisis: a powerful interstellar empire arrives at Earth expecting a quick conquest, and humanity is suddenly forced to fight with whatever it can salvage.
The story spends a lot of time with the practical side of resistance, scattered units linking up, figuring out communications, and turning civilian infrastructure into something that can hurt an enemy. Weber also leans into the viewpoint of the invaders, showing how arrogance and bad assumptions can be just as dangerous as a weapons gap.
The war is global, but it’s fought by small groups.
Later books widen the lens beyond the first shock, as survivors and allies grapple with what contact really means and what kind of future can be built after the initial disaster. If you like invasion fiction that mixes hard problem-solving with big swings, this is the series.
