Out of Dodge Books in Order

Out of Dodge is an interesting outlier in Scott Bartlett's catalog. It is shorter, leaner, and less concerned with fleet combat than the work he became best known for later. Instead, it plays in dystopian science fiction, with a future that feels boxed in by systems that promise order and safety while making ordinary life steadily less human.

The series follows Carl Intoever through that kind of pressure-cooker world. Even from the little glimpses we get early on, it is clear that this is not a setting built for comfort. Institutions manage behavior, prison is part of the landscape rather than a shocking exception, and getting out of a bad situation rarely means stepping into a good one. The tone is controlled, uneasy, and skeptical about the people running the show.

Escape is not the same thing as freedom.

That is the running feeling across these two books. Carl is not navigating an adventure playground. He is trying to move through a system that has already decided what people are for, what risks are acceptable, and how dissent should be handled. That gives the duology a more claustrophobic mood than Bartlett's space operas, even when the stakes remain fully speculative and futuristic.

If you are coming to this page after reading his later military sci-fi, Out of Dodge shows a different side of the same writerly interests. The pressure is still there. The institutions are still flawed. The characters are still forced to make choices when every available option looks bad. The difference is scale. Here the threat feels personal and social first, cosmic second, which gives the books their own distinct bite.
