After the Galaxy Books in Order

After the Galaxy takes Scott Bartlett's usual military sci-fi instincts and drops them into a stranger, more high-concept future. Humanity did not simply spread to the stars. It also found a way to leave physical life behind, with most people uploading themselves into a digital utopia and abandoning the real galaxy to whoever was still willing, or forced, to remain in it.

That leaves Commander Joe Pikeman in a rough sort of job. He is one of the people tasked with protecting what is left in the physical world, the flesh-and-blood communities, the infrastructure that keeps the uploaded population running, and the settlements that sit exposed to pirates, predators, and power-hungry opportunists. He would like a quieter life. The series has other plans.

Earth, in these books, is not home in any comforting sense.

The first novel kicks off with murder, mystery, and a real feeling that something huge and rotten is hiding under the surface of the system. From there the series widens into conspiracy, bot uprisings, private ambition on a galactic scale, and the question of whether a civilization that has half-quit reality can still defend itself. Joe remains the anchor. He is a practical operator with personal stakes, family worries, and a strong instinct to keep pushing even when the universe goes weird.

The tone is a little different from Bartlett's straight fleet sagas. There is still action, still combat, still a lot of danger, but there is also more speculative strangeness, more social rot, and more interest in what happens when comfort and escapism become the center of a civilization. If you like military science fiction with a weirder edge and a big central idea driving the whole thing, After the Galaxy is one of his more distinctive series.
