The book has some caper energy, some Hollywood satire, and a lot of warmth, especially once Otto and Russel decide they are not willing to stand by while someone wrecks work they care about.

The real heart of the series is the bond between Otto and Russel. Their history matters. They have dated, broken up, and remained deeply important to each other anyway. That gives these books a slightly different emotional shape than a standard romance. There is affection, frustration, loyalty, and unfinished feeling in the air, but the bigger question is how two people keep choosing each other as friends while their lives keep shifting. Supporting characters, especially Mo, help keep the books lively and grounded.

These books are funny, but they are not lightweight.

Hartinger uses Otto's acting career to talk about difference in a plain, unsentimental way. Otto is dealing with a looks-driven business, but the series is really about the wider pressure to make yourself easier for other people to process. The tone stays warm, quick, and inviting, mixing banter, travel, career panic, and real vulnerability. If you like queer fiction with strong character chemistry, lots of motion, and a real interest in friendship as a love story of its own, this series has a lot to offer.
