Series background & context

The Ordinary People Change the World series grew out of Brad Meltzer’s frustration at what his own kids were seeing as “heroes”. He wanted something besides princesses and reality TV stars on their T shirts, so he teamed up with illustrator Christopher Eliopoulos to build a different kind of picture book biography.

Each book in the series focuses on one real person, from Abraham Lincoln and Amelia Earhart to Rosa Parks, Neil Armstrong, Frida Kahlo and Malala Yousafzai. The stories are told in the first person, with the hero narrating their own childhood. You meet them not as statues on a pedestal, but as kids who were scared, curious, stubborn or shy, and who slowly learned that those traits could be used to do something good.

The art is bright and cartoony. The heroes have large heads, simple expressions and kid sized bodies, which makes them feel approachable to young readers. Serious moments are still there - segregation, war, discrimination, disability - but they are filtered through a gentle, age appropriate lens that focuses on courage, empathy and problem solving rather than trauma.

Every book leans hard on a single character trait. I Am Rosa Parks highlights quiet strength and standing up to bullies. I Am Albert Einstein celebrates curiosity. I Am Jane Goodall centers on patience and kindness toward animals. That focus makes it easy for parents and teachers to spin short conversations out of each story about what it means to be brave, fair, creative or determined in everyday life.

Over time the line has grown beyond standard picture books. There are board book adaptations for toddlers that distill the message down to a few simple ideas, as well as collections and gift books that gather quotes and art from across the series. The PBS Kids show Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum takes the same heroes and sends a trio of kids back in time to meet them.

If you are new to the series, you can safely start anywhere, but many families like to begin with figures kids may already recognize from school, such as Lincoln, Amelia Earhart, Martin Luther King Jr., or Harriet Tubman. However you approach it, the through line is simple and reassuring: these famous figures were once ordinary children, and ordinary kids today can make a difference too.
