Author bio
Brad Meltzer was born in Brooklyn, New York, on April 1, 1970, and grew up first in Brooklyn and then in South Florida. His parents worked hard to keep the family afloat, and he has often talked about being the first in his immediate family to attend a four year college. That sense of being an ordinary kid from a working family never really left him.
At the University of Michigan he studied by day and wrote by night, eventually moving to Boston, where he worked in the sales department of a games magazine. In a tiny apartment he drafted his first novel, a campus story called Fraternity. It collected two dozen rejection letters and never saw print, but the process convinced him that telling stories was not just a hobby.
He headed to Columbia Law School with his childhood sweetheart, Cori, and there his worlds began to overlap. While juggling classes and law review, he co wrote the original swearing in oath for AmeriCorps and kept working on fiction. His second manuscript, a legal thriller called The Tenth Justice, sold while he was still in law school and went on to hit the bestseller lists. Instead of a traditional legal career, he chose the much less predictable path of full time writing.
Meltzer’s early novels, including Dead Even, The First Counsel, The Millionaires, The Zero Game and The Book of Fate, live at the crossroads of law, politics and suspense. They are packed with congressional back rooms, secret tunnels, presidential trivia and the small mistakes that blow up ordinary lives. Later books like The Book of Lies and The House of Secrets lean even harder into hidden history, tying modern crimes to old stories about Superman’s creators, Benedict Arnold and the Bible.
He is also drawn to long running arcs. In the Culper Ring trilogy - The Inner Circle, The Fifth Assassin and The President’s Shadow - archivist Beecher White stumbles into a secret spy ring that claims to protect the presidency, uncovering coded artifacts, copycat assassins and buried family secrets along the way.
Another set of thrillers follows mortician Jim "Zig" Zigarowski and army artist Nola Brown. Starting with The Escape Artist, continuing in The Lightning Rod and The Viper, these books move through Dover Air Force Base, Cold War bunkers and long cold murder cases. They mix action with grief, found family and the messy question of what we owe the dead.
Outside of fiction, Meltzer has written a string of nonfiction projects that chase real life mysteries. Heroes for My Son and Heroes for My Daughter collect short portraits of people whose lives he wanted his kids to know. History Decoded grew out of his television series about historical puzzles, and later collaborations like The First Conspiracy, The Lincoln Conspiracy, The Nazi Conspiracy and The JFK Conspiracy dig into little known plots against American presidents.
For many readers, his most visible work is for children. With artist Christopher Eliopoulos he created the Ordinary People Change the World picture books, beginning with I Am Abraham Lincoln and I Am Amelia Earhart. Each title shows a famous figure as a child, focusing on a single trait like courage, curiosity or persistence. The series grew into board books for toddlers, spin off collections and an animated PBS Kids show that brings those heroes to life for a new audience.
Meltzer has never hidden his love of comics. He wrote Green Arrow: The Archer’s Quest, the DC miniseries Identity Crisis and a run on Justice League of America that includes The Tornado’s Path and The Lightning Saga, plus a story arc for Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight. He later helped launch the creator owned Ghost Machine imprint, contributing to its first wave of stories.
Away from the page, he co created the television drama Jack and Bobby and hosted history shows that chased coded messages, missing artifacts and lost flags. He helped raise money to restore the Cleveland house where Superman was created and used his platform to help find a kidney donor for his former history teacher.
Meltzer lives in Florida with his wife, Cori, an attorney, and their three children. Whether he is writing about presidents, superheroes, or a kid who stands up to a bully, his work circles the same idea again and again: ordinary people, given the right moment, can change the world.
