Series background & context

Oracles of Delphi Keep is Victoria Laurie's middle grade fantasy adventure series, and it feels different from her adult mysteries right away. The story begins on the White Cliffs of Dover at an orphanage called Delphi Keep, where Ian Wigby and his sister Theodosia, usually called Theo, discover that their lives are tied to an ancient prophecy. What starts as an odd discovery turns into a quest with the fate of the world hanging over it.

That escalates quickly.

The books mix several big ingredients, a wartime England setting, Greek prophecy, magical portals, gifted children, and a battle against a darkness that is growing stronger by the day. Ian is the emotional center of the series, but he is never alone for long. Theo is every bit as important, and their friend Carl helps round out the core trio. As the prophecy unfolds, other children with unusual abilities come into the picture, because the larger mission depends on gathering a group, not just finding a single chosen one.

One thing that makes this series stand out is the way it blends classic quest fantasy with a very specific historical mood. Delphi Keep is not floating in a timeless fairyland. The books are shaped by the approach of war, by fear, by displacement, and by the sense that the world children know is already being rearranged around them. That gives the magical parts more weight. The danger is not abstract. It is right outside the door.

Laurie also keeps the books moving. There are riddles to solve, prophecies to decode, strange creatures to outrun, and powerful enemies closing in from more than one direction. Sorcerers, hellhounds, curses, and hidden passages all play a part. Still, the heart of the series stays with the children, what they owe each other, how much they are willing to risk, and how frightening it is to be told you matter in a story that is much bigger than you are.

Ian is a good example of that balance. He is brave, but not because he is fearless. He is usually scared, unsure, and painfully aware that prophecy keeps asking more from him. Theo gives the books some of their backbone. She is smart, steady, and never treated like a side character in her own story.

This is a series about chosen children, but it is also about found family.

If you are coming to Laurie for the first time through these books, expect more fantasy than mystery, but the same love of suspense and momentum. Start with Oracles of Delphi Keep and keep going in order. The prophecies build on each other, and the growing sense of world, history, and danger is a big part of the fun.
