Author bio

Victoria Laurie did not start out planning a writing career. Before her first novel, she worked in corporate America, a world she has described as rigid, joyless, and far removed from the way her mind naturally worked. Even then, she says, her brain kept turning everything into story.

A layoff helped change the direction of her life. In 2003 she picked up Janet Evanovich's One for the Money, heard a voice on the page that felt close to her own sense of humor, and decided to try writing a mystery herself. She has said she called her sister and announced that she was going to write a book. Not long after, she landed on the idea that became Abby Cooper, Psychic Eye, a mystery about an amateur sleuth whose strongest clue is her intuition.

That idea came from somewhere personal.

Laurie has long described herself as intuitive, but she did not treat that side of her life as a profession right away. She has said she noticed odd flashes and impressions as a child, and only started exploring them more seriously in her early thirties. Encouraged by a friend who worked professionally in intuitive guidance, she began offering readings on a small scale. Over time, those sessions grew by word of mouth into a long-running practice, and that real-world experience fed directly into her fiction.

It also shaped the way she writes psychic characters. Laurie has talked about how frustrated she gets with vague, theatrical psychics in fiction. Her own books tend to make intuition feel more practical and more specific, something that can offer clues without handing over the whole answer. That balance became the engine of the Abby Cooper novels, where visions help start the investigation, not finish it.

She did not leave her day job immediately. Laurie has said it took several years after her debut before she could write full time, because the early money was small. But the books kept finding readers. Series like Abby Cooper, Psychic Eye and What's a Ghoul to Do? built a loyal following by mixing murder plots with banter, friendship, romance, and just enough paranormal weirdness to keep things off balance.

She likes to switch lanes, too. Oracles of Delphi Keep moved her into middle grade adventure, with wartime danger, prophecy, and gifted children at the center. When took her into darker YA suspense through Maddie Fynn, a girl who can see the exact date people will die. Later books such as Coached to Death and A Trinket for the Taking show how easily she can move between cozy mystery, paranormal adventure, and fantasy-tinged crime stories.

Justice matters in her work.

So do messy families, second chances, and the trouble that comes with knowing more than you want to know. Her heroines are rarely polished. They worry, argue, misread people, eat badly, fall in love, and keep going anyway. That grounded feeling is a big part of the appeal, even when the plot involves ghosts, prophecies, or cursed objects.

Today Laurie lives in suburban Michigan. Alongside writing, she continues to offer intuitive sessions and remains active in true crime and mystery storytelling through Psychic Eye Mysteries Podcast. Across all of it, the through line is easy to spot, ordinary people facing extraordinary information, then trying to decide what to do with it before time runs out.
