Series background & context

The original Op Center novels imagine a small U.S. agency built to manage crises that fall between the cracks of traditional bureaucracies. Officially called the National Crisis Management Center, or NCMC, the group is informally known as Op‑Center—and it answers directly to the president.

At the core of the series is Paul Hood, a former mayor drafted to run this hybrid of intelligence shop, think tank, and command post. Around him are specialists: General Mike Rodgers, who leads the paramilitary Striker unit; analysts who track political and military flash points; and liaisons to agencies that are sometimes allies and sometimes obstacles.

Each book drops Op‑Center into a different hot spot. The early stories deal with anti‑unification extremists on the Korean peninsula, power struggles inside the new Russia, and nationalist or separatist movements that threaten to drag major powers into conflict. Later installments range from hostage crises at the United Nations to covert power plays inside Washington itself.

Instead of focusing on a single field operative, the series moves back and forth between briefing rooms and front lines. Readers see how fragmentary intelligence, inter‑agency rivalry, and political pressure shape the choices Hood and his team can make. When Striker deploys, it does so with that messy backdrop always in play.

The tone is geopolitical rather than purely tactical. Op‑Center stories look at how local grievances, aging weapons stockpiles, and media coverage can turn a regional problem into a global one overnight. They also show the personal toll on staff who live in a perpetual state of "on call", juggling family lives with overnight flights into dangerous environments.

Taken together, the Op‑Center books offer a tour of late 20th‑century flashpoints through the lens of a fictional crisis unit. Readers who enjoy ensemble casts, multiple points of view, and plots that hinge on both diplomacy and daring raids will find plenty to dig into here.
