Author bio
O'Neil de Noux was born in New Orleans in 1950, and that city runs through almost everything he writes. His father was of French descent, his mother of Sicilian descent, and because his father served in the U.S. Army, de Noux spent parts of his childhood in Oklahoma, Kansas, Mississippi, Italy, and finally back in the New Orleans area.
While living in Italy, he read constantly and watched a steady stream of Hollywood movies on base. That mix of books, movies, and story mechanics stayed with him. Reading The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury pushed him to start writing, even if he later joked that those first science fiction stories were terrible.
He came to crime fiction the honest way.
After high school he worked as a police cadet, spent time as an FBI clerk, was drafted into the U.S. Army, served as a combat still photographer, and earned a degree in European history from Troy University. Back in Louisiana, he worked in criminal intelligence and then joined the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office as a patrol officer before moving into homicide.
That experience shaped everything that followed. De Noux later said homicide work showed him what he ought to write about, and it is easy to see why his police novels feel lived-in rather than guessed at. He solved fifteen murders as lead investigator, helped on many others, and was named Homicide Detective of the Year in 1981.
His breakthrough came when he turned a patrolman character into homicide detective Dino LaStanza and finished Grim Reaper. More LaStanza books followed, and then other recurring investigators arrived, including John Raven Beau, Lucien Caye, and Jacques Dugas. Across those series, readers tend to come for the sharp New Orleans setting, the street-level dialogue, and the sense that police work, private-eye work, and local history all have weight.
New Orleans is all over his fiction. In books like John Raven Beau and The Long Cold, he writes modern crime with grit and pressure. In The French Detective and New Orleans Heat, he shifts into historical mystery. In New Orleans Rapacious and Hold Me, Babe, he leans into postwar private-eye noir.
He did not stay in one lane.
De Noux also wrote historical novels such as Battle Kiss and USS Relentless, science fiction collected in Backwash of the Milky Way, and stranger side trips into supernatural, adventure, and erotic fiction. Short stories have been just as important to his career. He published widely, won Shamus Awards for private-eye short stories, won a Derringer Award, and taught writing at Tulane, the University of New Orleans, Delgado Community College, and later McNeese State University.
Hurricane Katrina changed his life, as it did for so many New Orleanians. After the storm badly damaged his home, he relocated for a time, later resettled in St. Tammany Parish, and returned to law enforcement work as an investigator at Southeastern Louisiana University before retiring in 2017.
He married Debra Gray De Noux in 1992, and the two have collaborated on stories. He also has two children from an earlier marriage, the artists Vincent and Dana De Noux. That family thread shows up around the work too, in collaborations, cover art, and the feeling that for de Noux, writing has never been far from the rest of life.
