They are closer to the spirit of a wartime matinee, with exotic locations, sinister enemies, beautiful allies who can hold their own, and cliffhanger-style danger around every turn. De Noux still brings his usual interest in action and momentum, but here he lets himself play with a much broader toy box.

The pre-World War II setting helps. Because the books take place on the edge of global catastrophe, the stakes already feel high before the supernatural and superhero elements arrive. The villains are not abstract. They are tied to the real authoritarian forces gathering strength in Europe and Asia. That gives the novels more weight than a simple treasure hunt would have on its own.

Readers coming from the New Orleans crime books should not expect another detective series in different clothes. The Lucifer novels are a different animal, faster, stranger, and more openly pulpy. But if you like adventurous fiction with spies, powers, danger, and a looming sense of world crisis, they are a fun change of pace, and the two books fit neatly together as a compact series.
