Series background & context

One Dark Soul is a later DI Hogarth trilogy that opens with a grim image, blood on the beach and the sense that the killer is working to a plan. Hogarth is back in the thick of it, and the case does not give him room to breathe.

Sue Palmer and Ecrin Kaplin are right there with him, which gives the books a strong team feel. They are dealing with evidence that looks staged, leads that keep shifting, and a criminal who wants attention without giving away identity.

The tone is tense and modern, with short scenes and a steady rise in urgency. These are not standalones where the slate is wiped clean. The danger carries forward, and the pressure on the unit keeps increasing.

There is also a sense of personal risk. The closer they get, the more it feels like the investigators themselves are part of the target.

Start with One Dark Soul, then read One Dark Heart and One Dark Night in order to follow the full hunt and the fallout.
