Neither of them expects the trip to become a fight to stay alive. Their small plane crashes en route to the Callahan family's island home, leaving Anna and T.J. stranded on an uninhabited island. With no quick rescue in sight, they have to find water, food, shelter, and ways to survive storms and the dangers of the surrounding sea. Anna begins as the adult responsible for T.J., but the situation forces both of them to grow in ways they never planned for.

The series takes its time with the physical realities of being cast away, but the emotional questions matter just as much. Months pass, T.J. gets older, and the relationship between tutor and student becomes increasingly difficult to define. The premise asks readers to sit with the complications rather than pretend they are not there. Uncharted is a companion novella that returns to Anna and T.J.'s world while introducing Owen Sparks, a young dot-com millionaire trying to escape the pressures and resentment surrounding his money. In the Maldives, Owen meets Calia Reed, a British traveler vacationing with her brother. Their story gradually reveals connections to the earlier disaster and gives the wider On the Island world another angle.

Read On the Island first and Uncharted second. The novella is not a substitute for the opening novel, since its emotional weight depends on knowing Anna and T.J.'s experience.
