Daniel Hecht Books in Order

Daniel Hecht was born into an artists' community in New York State, and his life has never followed a single neat track. He has lived in New York, the Philippines, Wisconsin, Illinois, Washington, DC, Virginia, California, Iowa, and Vermont. That breadth shows up in his fiction, which is often deeply tied to place and to people trying to make sense of complicated inner and outer worlds.

Music came first.

Before he published novels, Hecht spent years as a guitarist and composer. His solo albums were released in the United States and Europe, including Willow, and he performed concerts across the United States, Europe, and China. He also won Vermont Arts Council fellowships for composition, which gives you a sense of how serious and long-running that part of his creative life was.

Then writing took over.

A hand injury ended his long career as a professional guitarist, and Hecht turned hard toward fiction. He earned an MFA in Writing from the Iowa Writers' Workshop, where he also taught fiction as the winner of a Teaching-Writing Fellowship. Teaching stayed with him after that, and he later taught writing and literature at the University of Iowa, the Community College of Vermont, Johnson State College, and Champlain College.

His first novel, Skull Session, made a strong entrance. It follows Paul Skoglund, a man living with Tourette's syndrome, and mixes crime, fear, psychology, and neuroscience in a way that felt unusual for a debut thriller. Hecht followed it with The Babel Effect, a bigger, more outward-looking suspense novel about scientists trying to understand the roots of violence and the collapse of human empathy.

A lot of readers know him best for the Cree Black books, beginning with City of Masks and continuing with Land of Echoes and Bones of the Barbary Coast. Cree is a Seattle parapsychologist and clinical psychologist who leads a small paranormal research group, and the books send her into haunted houses, possession cases, and buried histories in places like New Orleans, New Mexico, and San Francisco. What makes those novels memorable is the balance. They enjoy eerie atmosphere and supernatural possibility, but they stay focused on grief, memory, family damage, and the human cost of belief.

His later fiction turned closer to the ground. On Brassard's Farm is a rural Vermont novel about hard work, solitude, and unexpected love, while The Body Below returns to suspense through a Vermont murder case and a disturbing discovery in a lake. Different premises, same habit of taking character seriously.

Hecht has never worked in only one lane. Alongside the novels, he has written nonfiction, including The Farm Energy Handbook and the environmental newspaper column The Green Grapevine, and has worked in nonprofit and environmental leadership roles in Vermont. His books have appeared in 14 languages and more than 100 editions, but the more useful thing to know is this: he brings a musician's ear, a teacher's patience, and a practical worker's eye for detail to everything he writes.

He has long been based in Vermont, and that mix of artistic, civic, and lived experience helps explain why his fiction often feels both thoughtful and fully inhabited.
