Omar El Akkad Books in Order

Sarat Chestnut grows up displaced by a second American Civil War in a future transformed by climate change. Life in a refugee camp and a mysterious mentor’s influence turn her personal losses into consequences that reach far beyond her family.

Nine-year-old Syrian boy Amir survives a refugee shipwreck and meets Vänna, an island teenager determined to protect him. Alternating accounts of his voyage and their flight toward safety explore childhood, displacement, and the limits of compassion.

Drawing on his reporting and experience as an immigrant, El Akkad examines the gap between Western promises of justice and the violence he has witnessed. The book challenges complacency toward suffering while exploring the possibility of belonging and collective resistance.
