Series background & context
Obsidian Rim is a wider shared science fiction setting, and Shona Husk's books drop into that world through mercenaries, rough jobs, and the kind of people who live far from safe, central power. It is a frontier universe built for pressure.
The name fits. This is edge-of-space storytelling, where stations, ships, contracts, and uneasy alliances matter more than idealism. People work for whoever can pay. Corporations and powerful families have longer reach than they should. And if someone wants freedom, they usually have to carve it out for themselves.
Husk's entries in the setting use the Dead Suns crew to give readers a way in. That is smart because mercenaries can move across the world naturally. They can take jobs from the desperate, the selfish, and the dangerous, which means each story opens another corner of the setting without needing a giant info dump.
Romance in this kind of universe works best when it grows out of survival, and that is what these books do. Attraction is complicated by money, loyalty, mission failure, and the fact that no one can afford to be careless for long. The result is a series with both movement and intimacy.
If you enjoy shared-world space romance, Obsidian Rim is appealing because it feels bigger than any single couple while still giving the couple center stage. You get the texture of a larger universe without losing the personal stakes.
Come to it for the frontier atmosphere, the ethical mess of hired work, and the way Husk finds room for tenderness in a world that does not make that easy.
