Series background & context

The Nuclear War sequence, built around the Aftermath books, is one of Bobby Akart's starkest survival stories. It opens with a nightmare born from modern systems, AI errors and geopolitical tension combine to trigger a global nuclear exchange in less than an hour. That setup is big, but the emotional center is the Bartlett family, fourth-generation lobstermen from Swan's Island, Maine.

Akart uses that family well. Billy and Tammy Bartlett, their children, and the people around them are grounded enough to keep the books from floating away into pure scenario fiction. The war is immense, but the story is about what it feels like to lose communication, lose certainty, and still have to move, protect, and choose.

The bombs are only the start.

As the series progresses, the focus shifts from blast effects to the longer aftermath, fallout, firestorms, cold, famine, and the search for a place that might still support life. The later books widen geographically, but they never stop feeling like a family survival saga.

If you want Akart at his most relentless, Nuclear War is a strong choice. It is less about winning and more about enduring, which gives the series a grim, steady force.
