Series background & context

Black Swan moves Bobby Akart into first-contact territory, but it still feels like one of his books. The story begins when NASA's SWAN space telescope detects what seems to be an interstellar comet. At first it looks like a scientific curiosity. Then the data starts to point somewhere stranger, and much more dangerous.

What makes the series feel distinct is the way it mixes several modes at once. There is a conspiracy thriller running through it, with secrecy at the highest levels. There is a survival element, especially as cities burn and systems fail. And there is a family story, centered on the Pickett family in Texas, who are clearly connected to the mystery before they fully understand why.

The sky is not the only problem.

As the books continue, the threat shifts from the object itself to what follows it, strange metallic presences, hidden forces, and a growing sense that humanity has been watched for much longer than it realized. That lets the series widen without losing its emotional center.

If you like your disaster thrillers with a science fiction edge, Black Swan is the place to go. It still has Akart's familiar pace and pressure, but the questions are bigger, lonelier, and a lot more cosmic than in his ground-level collapse fiction.
