North of the Tension Line Books in Order

The North of the Tension Line books are set around Door County and Washington Island in Wisconsin, but the real hook is what happens when a smart, somewhat bruised outsider tries to build a life in a place that notices everything. The series begins with North of the Tension Line, when former Chicago reporter and freelance writer Fiona Campbell lands in Ephraim, gets drawn toward Washington Island, and agrees to spend winter there on a dare.

The setting does a lot of the work.

Washington Island is beautiful, remote, cold, and deeply social in the way small places often are. The ferry matters. The weather matters. The split between summer visitors and year-round residents matters. Riordan uses all of that to create a world that can feel peaceful one minute and hard-edged the next. The phrase north of the tension line comes from island residents themselves, a way of naming life a little removed from mainland rush.

Fiona stays at the center, but this is very much an ensemble series. Elisabeth, Roger, Pete Landry, ferry captain and poet Pali, Ben, Oliver Robert, Emily Martin, Stella, and other locals all carry pieces of the story. Some are generous, some meddling, some stubborn, and some manage to be all three at once. Their friendships, romances, grievances, and town-business arguments are what keep the books moving. There are also goats, dogs, hotel plans, and clubs that take books very seriously.

The plots often sound small until you are in them. Later books bring in nighttime disturbances, goat-related chaos, elections, town board headaches, suspicious fires, shoreline deals, book clubs, and plenty of gossip. The Audacity of Goats, Robert's Rules, A Small Earnest Question, and Throwing Bears for George all widen the world without losing the close-up feel. The stakes are usually about home, reputation, love, money, and belonging, which is exactly why they matter.

These books care about weather, gossip, civic grudges, and whether people show up for each other.

That mix gives the series its tone. It is literary without being fussy, funny without turning silly, and reflective without giving up plot. There is mystery here, but not in the usual detective-series way. The larger question is how people live together in a small community, and what kindness, vanity, loneliness, faith, or pride can do once everyone is watching. By the time the later books roll around, the town itself feels like a cast member, not just a backdrop. The books work best in order, because Fiona's connection to the island deepens step by step, and so does everyone else's.
