What ties the series together is the balance between rules and desire. Cameron thinks she can keep romance separate from career. Grace thinks she can control what kind of life she is supposed to want. Both books then ask what happens when attraction makes those neat plans useless. West keeps the focus tight on her couples, but the friendships matter too. The women feel connected to each other, which gives the series a nice sense of continuity even though each romance can stand on its own.

If you are looking for high angst, this is probably not West's heaviest series. If you want sharp attraction, banter, workplace trouble, small-town collisions, and characters who are learning how to choose their own lives, it lands well. No Kissing Allowed is fun, sexy, and easy to read, but it is not weightless. Underneath the kisses, both books are really about what adulthood looks like when the script you were handed stops making sense.
