Nix Books in Order

The Nix series follows a woman who has already lived through the kind of past most people would not survive. Nix is an ex-assassin, and retirement is not exactly peaceful. When her family is threatened, she steps back into the violence she tried to leave behind and makes it very clear that she is done being cornered.

This is revenge with fire under it.

The series begins with Fury of a Phoenix, and the title tells you a lot about the mood. Nix is not a soft heroine waiting for permission. She is angry, skilled, and often terrifying to the people who made the mistake of touching what she loves. Mayer uses that setup to explore loyalty, motherhood, old debts, and the cost of being very good at doing damage.

The books move fast, but they also keep circling the emotional price of Nix’s choices. Violence can solve one problem and create three more. Allies matter because no one can keep outrunning every enemy forever. Family matters because it is the reason Nix keeps standing up, even when the past has her by the throat.

The Nix books sit well beside Mayer’s other urban fantasy worlds, but they have a harder edge. The magic and supernatural trouble are there, yet the engine is personal. Someone hurt Nix’s family. Nix is going to answer.

Read the trilogy first, then continue into the later connected books if you want more of that aftermath and expansion. This is a strong branch for readers who like older, battle-tested heroines, fast pacing, and stories where mercy has to be earned.
