Series background & context
Nine Lives Magic begins with one of Danielle Garrett's best hooks, a witch who suddenly inherits an ancient familiar that can talk, judge, and cause trouble at Olympic levels. The witch is Cora, who thought her life was already complicated enough. Then Selene arrives, all sharp opinions and feline ego, and the series takes off from there.
What makes the books especially fun is that the familiar is not a cute accessory. Selene is a full personality, and a lot of the series energy comes from the uneasy partnership between her and Cora. In Witchy Whiskers, Cora is already juggling an old family inheritance, an ex-husband back in town, and a murder investigation. Selene does not simplify any of that. She just makes it louder and much more entertaining.
The setting has the same cozy-magical feel that Garrett does well elsewhere, with a lake town, local businesses, and a supernatural community that feels lived in rather than decorative. But Nine Lives Magic leans a little more serialized than some of her other series. Starting with Hexed Hiss-tory and Cursed Claws, the books tie Cora and Selene to the mystery around Aunt Lavender, her disappearance, and the increasingly dangerous secrets connected to her past. That longer thread gives the series a stronger ongoing adventure feel.
Later books widen the world without losing the personal center. Purr-fect Potions, Furry Fortunes, and Talisman Tails push the Aunt Lavender story forward, while books like Stray Spells, Mystic Meow, and Catnip Charms fold in cursed objects, local murders, wedding stress, and other magical disasters. Even when the stakes get bigger, the books still come back to the core appeal, Cora trying to hold onto an ordinary life while Selene and the wider magical world make ordinary nearly impossible.
The cat angle is funny, but the series is not all jokes. There is real affection underneath the bickering, and Cora's growing confidence gives the books their backbone. She starts from a place of reacting to chaos, then slowly becomes someone who can choose her allies, chase answers, and stand her ground.
If you like talking cats, ongoing magical mysteries, a bit of treasure-hunt energy, and a heroine who learns that starting over can get very weird very fast, Nine Lives Magic is easy to fall for.
