What a Ghost Wants

by Danielle Garrett

2024

This prequel follows Scarlet Sanderson as she heads to Beechwood Harbor with dreams of opening a flower shop. A peaceful fresh start proves unlikely once she learns the town is a paranormal haven.

Series background & context

The Beechwood Harbor Ghost Mystery series centers on Scarlet Sanderson, a florist who has spent most of her life dealing with the dead whether she wanted to or not. Scarlet can see ghosts, hear them, and, more importantly, get dragged into their business. She would very much prefer a quieter existence, but ghosts are not known for respecting boundaries.

That setup gives the series its personality right away. Scarlet is not chasing adventure for the thrill of it. She is trying to make a life for herself in Beechwood Harbor, run her shop, and avoid becoming the local paranormal help desk. The problem is that restless spirits keep arriving with unfinished business, cold cases, and grudges that have only gotten sharper with time. In Beechwood Harbor, the dead are rarely content to stay politely in the background.

The seaside setting helps a lot. The town has the same cozy, close-knit feel that runs through Garrett's wider Beechwood books, but this series leans harder into hauntings, old secrets, and emotional loose ends. The Ghost Hunter Next Door sets the tone with Scarlet trying to keep her gift quiet while getting pulled into a dangerous mystery. From there, books like Ghosts Gone Wild, When Good Ghosts Get the Blues, and Big Ghosts Don't Cry keep widening the world, sending Scarlet from hometown trouble to travel mishaps that still somehow circle back to murder and the supernatural.

One thing the series does well is balance the spooky setup with warmth. Scarlet may spend a lot of time talking to people who are technically dead, but the books do not feel gloomy. There is humor, gossip, romantic tension, and a recurring sense that the ghostly side of town is its own oddball community. A spectral cat, stubborn spirits, and plenty of half-solved history give the series a playful edge.

The stakes also feel personal in a different way than in the witch books. Scarlet is usually helping people who can no longer help themselves. That means the mysteries often carry a little extra sadness, because what is being uncovered is not just who did it, but what got left behind. Later books like Diamonds Are a Ghost's Best Friend, Ghosts Just Wanna Have Fun, and Mean Ghosts keep that mix of romance, humor, and unfinished business going.

If you like your cozy mysteries a little more haunted, with a likable heroine, a strong small-town setting, and ghosts who refuse to let old stories stay buried, this is a good place to start.
