Nine Heirs and a Spare is one of Donna McDonald's most ambitious blends of paranormal women's fiction, fantasy, and mythology. The series begins with Atlanta, a goddess tied to Greek myth who now looks and feels like a middle-aged mortal woman, which means saving the world comes with prophecy stress, aching joints, and a lot of sarcastic commentary.

Atlanta is the key to everything.

She is the forgotten twin of Athena, raised among the Muses rather than celebrated like the better-known gods. That history gives the series its emotional engine. Atlanta is powerful, but she is also overlooked, resentful, funny, and very aware that she has spent a long time cleaning up everyone else's chaos. When a prophecy threatens her pantheon, she has no choice but to take it seriously, even if she would rather hit something with a sword and be done with it.

The books follow Atlanta through a sequence of increasingly strange tasks tied to that prophecy. Along the way she gathers allies, deals with gods who are no less annoying just because they are divine, and works beside her chosen champion, Cale. The relationship between Atlanta and Cale gives the series some of its romantic pull, but this is not a quiet couple-focused fantasy. It is bigger than that. Dragons, pegasi, gorgons, dark fairies, Titans, and other mythic beings keep the scope wide and the stakes moving.

What makes the series stand out is the mix of epic setup and very human voice. Atlanta may be a goddess, but she complains like a tired woman who has had enough of everyone. That grounded tone keeps the mythology from feeling distant. Books such as Midlife Muse, Muse It or Lose It, Muse No More, ExMuse Me, Not aMused, and Muse Inspired keep building the same long arc while letting each task bring out a different side of her.

This is a good fit for readers who like fantasy with a strong female lead, older-character perspective, and a healthy dose of humor. It is also one of McDonald's clearest examples of how she likes to write women in midlife, even when those women happen to be divine.

Expect prophecy quests, bickering gods, creature-filled fantasy politics, and a heroine who would really like a break but is never going to get one.
