Author bio
Donna McDonald grew up in Vanceburg, Kentucky, and spent decades doing other kinds of work before she ever published a novel. She has said she did just about everything for a living except write books, which makes her late start feel very much in step with the kinds of second chances she loves to write.
Her first published novel, Dating a Cougar, arrived in March 2011. That book set the tone for a lot of what followed, older characters, sharp humor, frank attraction, and women who are not interested in pretending life stops after divorce, loss, or fifty.
She came to fiction seriously after personal loss changed the way she looked at time.
A television profile about people reinventing themselves after fifty noted that the death of her daughter pushed her to stop putting off the dream of writing. McDonald turned that grief and urgency into work, and then into a full-time career. On her own site, she writes about finally giving herself permission to do what she had wanted all along.
That late start became part of her voice.
Readers who pick up the Never Too Late books usually notice that first. The series is built around older heroines and heroes who are successful, bruised, funny, stubborn, and still very much alive to possibility. McDonald does not treat midlife or later life as the quiet part of the story. In her hands, it is often the moment when the real story begins.
But she did not stay in one lane for long. Contemporary romance led to romantic comedy, and romantic comedy led to paranormal and science fiction. McDonald has said she wanted to write action scenes, whole invented worlds, and bigger adventures, so books like Peyton 313, The Demon of Synar, and Ariel let her mix romance with cyborgs, alien politics, werewolves, and dangerous magic. Even in those wilder settings, her stories still come back to the same basics, strong women, appealing men, found family, and humor used as a survival tool.
That range is one of the fun things about following her bibliography. A reader can start with the family-centered chaos of Carved in Stone, jump to the futuristic moral mess of Peyton 313, then land in the myth-heavy midlife fantasy of Midlife Muse and still feel the same authorial hand behind all of it. McDonald likes banter. She likes characters who have lived long enough to know better and still do the reckless thing anyway. She also likes giving wounded people another shot at joy.
She writes a lot about reinvention, but not in a tidy self-help way. Her characters get older, lose partners, lose certainty, lose status, lose their illusions, and then keep going. Some fall in love again. Some save the world while complaining about their knees. Some do both.
McDonald has also shared a few grounded details about her writing life. She likes working in local coffee shops, partly because she enjoys the atmosphere and partly because she likes supporting them. When she is not out writing, she is at home at the big black desk in her office. It is a practical image, which feels right for her.
These days she writes as a full-time author, still bouncing between contemporary romance, paranormal romance, fantasy, and science fiction. Through all of it, the constant is easy to spot. Donna McDonald wants readers to laugh, root for grown women, and believe that love, pleasure, and adventure do not belong only to the young.
