Nikki & Michael Books in Order

The Nikki and Michael books sit right at the start of Keri Arthur's published career, and you can already see the mix she would come back to again and again: crime, danger, psychic gifts, and romance with teeth. The series opens with Nikki James, a private investigator who has spent most of her life trusting her instincts and getting by the hard way. She lives in a world that looks ordinary on the surface, at least until the night she crosses paths with vampire Michael Kelly.

That meeting changes everything.

Nikki is not a heroine who drifts through these books waiting for the supernatural world to explain itself to her. She digs. She asks questions she probably shouldn't. She gets involved in cases that begin with missing teenagers, kidnappings, or strange murders, then keep widening until it becomes clear that ordinary police work is not going to be enough. Michael, meanwhile, is old, dangerous, and trying very hard to keep control of appetites that could destroy both of them.

That push and pull is the heart of the series. On one side, you have case-based plots with investigations, disappearances, hostile vampires, and dark magic moving in the background. On the other, you have Nikki and Michael trying to figure out what a future together could even look like when one of them is stubbornly human and the other has spent centuries learning to keep people at a distance. Arthur gets a lot of mileage out of that tension.

The setting matters, too. These books have an urban fantasy feel, but they lean more toward paranormal detective romance than full world-spanning fantasy. Nikki's hometown of Lyndhurst gives the opening books a close, local pressure, the kind of place where everybody thinks they know what's going on until they really don't. Later stories open the map a bit more, but the mood stays personal. The danger is big, yet it always lands right in Nikki's life.

If you like series where the relationship grows alongside the mystery, this is a good one. Dancing with the Devil introduces the pair and the rules of the world. Hearts in Darkness pushes both the casework and the romance harder. Chasing the Shadows and Kiss the Night Goodbye raise the stakes again with bigger threats and more emotional fallout.

These are early Arthur books, but they already know exactly what they want to be. Fast. Dark. A little sexy. Very willing to throw Nikki into trouble and make her fight her way out.

And Nikki does fight.

That is really the appeal of the whole series. The supernatural elements matter, but so do nerve, loyalty, and the decision to keep moving even when the truth gets ugly.
