Nightsiders Books in Order

The Nightsiders books take place after a catastrophe called the Awakening, when the Opiri, an ancient vampire race, rise from long sleep and the world tips into war. By the time the series begins, the fighting has cooled into a tense armistice. Humans live in fortified Enclaves, vampires rule Citadels, and the land between them is a dangerous border zone full of ruins, patrols, raiders, and bad memories.

That setting does a lot of the work. Susan Krinard uses a broken Northern California landscape, especially the San Francisco Enclave and the vampire city of Erebus, to make every trip feel risky. Farms sit under guard. Old suburbs are crumbling back into the earth. Smaller mixed colonies try to prove humans and Opiri can live side by side, while hardliners on both sides keep pulling the future toward another war.

This is a romance series, but it runs on politics as much as passion.

Each novel follows a different couple, usually people who should not trust one another at all. Human operatives go undercover in vampire territory. Half-blood agents, Daysiders, Riders, scientists, former serfs, and Freeblood vampires all get pulled into the larger conflict. The love stories matter because they cross the same boundaries the wider world is trying, and often failing, to police.

Across the books, the big questions stay consistent. Can peace last if both sides still expect betrayal? What happens to people who do not fit neatly into human or vampire society? And can private loyalty survive when every personal choice has public consequences? Later stories widen the frame with assassination plots, kidnappings, fragile alliances, and even a deadly virus that could wreck any hope of a lasting settlement.

The tone is darker and more postwar than a cozy paranormal romance, but it is not all doom. There is a strong thread of hope here, especially when characters build trust across old lines of hatred. If you like paranormal romance with real worldbuilding and a continuing political arc behind the couples, Nightsiders is a good place to settle in. Start with Daysider and read in order if you want the setting and the emotional payoffs to unfold cleanly.
