Midgard Books in Order

The Midgard series starts with a great urban fantasy hook. Mist looks, at first glance, like a woman living a fairly ordinary life in San Francisco. She has a job, friends, a boyfriend, and a hard-earned routine. What she is really hiding is much older and far stranger: she is a Valkyrie, one of the survivors of an ancient Norse war that was supposed to end everything.

That buried past stops staying buried when impossible weather, frost giants, and the return of Loki begin tearing holes in her normal world. From there the series opens outward into surviving gods, old enemies, uneasy allies, and truths Mist has spent a very long time trying not to face. She is not just fighting monsters. She is dealing with memory, guilt, duty, and the ugly fact that history is ready to happen all over again.

This is myth dropped straight into city streets.

San Francisco matters here. Krinard uses the city as a place where ordinary modern life keeps colliding with something older and sharper. Mist is not a castle-born heroine in a fantasy realm. She is a warrior trying to keep one foot in the present while runes, magic, and ancient grudges keep pulling her backward. That mix gives the books a nice balance between everyday texture and big supernatural stakes.

The action is a big part of the draw. There are sword fights, magical confrontations, betrayals, and myth-heavy revelations, but the books are also grounded in character. Mist is tough, angry, loyal, and often tired of carrying more than anyone around her fully understands. Her relationships, especially with the few people who know what she really is, give the series its emotional shape.

If you want fast-moving urban fantasy with mythology at the center, Midgard is the Susan Krinard series to try. Begin with Mist. The short prequel Freeze Warning works nicely once you know the world, but the main doorway into the series is Mist herself, and the books are strongest when you follow her arc in order through Black Ice and Battlestorm.
