The Nightrunner series follows Alec of Kerry and Seregil of Rhíminee, two men whose work is much more complicated than it first appears. Alec begins as a young prisoner accused of a crime he did not commit. Seregil, his unexpected cellmate, is a nobleman, thief, spy, and expert at getting into trouble. Once they escape, Seregil takes Alec on as an apprentice and brings him into the hidden work known as nightrunning.

Their world is Skala, a kingdom under pressure from war, court rivalries, old prophecies, and dangerous magic. Alec and Seregil may pose as carefree nobles when it suits a mission, but they serve the queen and the people around her. Their assignments can involve burglary, coded messages, diplomatic journeys, murder investigations, and the sort of secrets that powerful people would rather keep buried.

Nothing stays simple for long.

The early books, beginning with Luck in the Shadows and Stalking Darkness, establish the partnership at the heart of the series. Alec is learning the rules of a wider, stranger world, while Seregil carries old wounds and responsibilities that do not stay in the past. The action moves through cities, roads, hidden chambers, and magical institutions, with the growing war between Skala and Plenimar always close by.

As the series continues, Traitor's Moon takes the pair into Seregil's homeland, where diplomacy, family history, and divided loyalties complicate a mission. Later books such as Shadows Return and The White Road deal with captivity, alchemy, bloodline, and the aftermath of events neither man can neatly leave behind. Casket of Souls brings them back to a tense royal court, while Shards of Time gives them a locked-room mystery on a sacred island.

At its core, this is fantasy about a partnership that keeps being tested. Alec and Seregil are lovers as well as colleagues, but the books make room for their work, their friends, their doubts, and their very different ways of facing danger. Their relationship is treated as normal within much of the setting, which lets the story focus on trust, loyalty, and survival rather than asking them to justify who they are.

Expect adventurous fantasy with spies instead of armies at the center, plus political schemes, eerie magic, and recurring friends who matter. Start with Luck in the Shadows and read the novels in publication order. Glimpses, a short-story collection, works best after The White Road, when its extra moments and backstory will carry more weight.
