Lynn Flewelling Books in Order

Lynn Flewelling was born in Presque Isle, Maine, and grew up in northern Maine. She graduated from the University of Maine at Presque Isle in 1981, then spent years doing the sensible jobs that often come before a writing career: teaching, house painting, necropsy work, freelance editing, and journalism.

Writing had been part of her life since childhood. As a teenager and college student, she wrote for herself, friends, and family, while learning how submissions and rejection letters worked. The project that made her feel like a novelist began as a character study and eventually became the first two Nightrunner books.

She started drafting Luck in the Shadows in a notebook on a Maine beach.

Published in 1996, Luck in the Shadows introduced Alec of Kerry and Seregil of Rhíminee, a young man and the wily spy who draws him into a much bigger world. The novel became a finalist for the Compton Crook Award and appeared on the Locus list for best first novels. It also set up the blend Flewelling returns to often: espionage, travel, magic, danger, and a partnership that grows stronger under pressure.

The Nightrunner novels follow Alec and Seregil through the kingdom of Skala and beyond. Readers come for the missions, political plots, old secrets, and strange magic, but the friendship and love between the two men give the books their center. Flewelling treats their relationship as part of the fabric of the world rather than as a problem the story has to solve.

Her second major sequence, the Tamír Triad, goes back centuries in Skala's history. Beginning with The Bone Doll's Twin, it follows a royal child hidden by dangerous magic while a kingdom suffers under a usurper's rule. Hidden Warrior and The Oracle's Queen widen that story into one about identity, loyalty, prophecy, war, and the cost of claiming a public role after a life built on secrecy.

The books can get dark. They also make room for banter, close friendships, stubborn courage, and people trying to do the right thing when every choice has consequences.

Flewelling has said that her past work, including time as a necropsy technician, sometimes found its way into the more unsettling details of her fiction. Her fantasy mixes adventure with horror touches, especially when magic demands a physical or emotional price. Across both series, she returns to questions of belonging, chosen family, power, gender, and the ways ordinary decency can matter in dangerous times.

Her work has been published in more than a dozen languages. She lives with her family in Southern California and has continued to work on new fiction while readers return to the long-running worlds of Nightrunner and Tamír.
