Nightfall (Mickey Zucker Reichert) Books in Order

The Nightfall books follow a man with more names than most people have friends. He is a thief, assassin, swordsman, magic wielder, and master of disguise, but the identity that causes the most fear is Nightfall. The series pairs high fantasy adventure with a central character who would rather stay free than become anyone's hero.

In The Legend of Nightfall, Nightfall has spent years escaping trouble by changing identities and moving to a new place whenever necessary. Eventually, that strategy fails. A royal trap leaves him bound by sorcery and oath to guard and guide a young prince. He cannot simply vanish, and he cannot ignore the danger gathering around his idealistic charge.

That forced partnership gives the first book its shape. Nightfall has the skills to survive, but protecting someone else requires patience, trust, and a willingness to be seen. The prince does not begin with a full understanding of who his new protector really is, while Nightfall has every reason to be wary of royal promises and courtly schemes.

The setting moves through courts, roads, seedy corners, and dangerous places where magic is sought after and power rarely comes without a price. Betrayal is a constant possibility. The plot has assassins, sorcery, and adventure, but the lasting tension comes from whether a man shaped by secrecy can accept responsibility without losing himself.

The Return of Nightfall continues after the prince has become King Edward and makes Nightfall, now known as Sudian, his advisor. Sudian still cannot talk the king out of honoring a dangerous debt to Duke Varsah. When the expedition ends in disaster and Edward disappears, Sudian must seek help from a man who may be responsible and who has strong reasons to want revenge.

The sequel widens the map to include sea travel, piracy, enemy territory, and more of the political world beyond the palace. Still, the heart of the series remains the difficult connection between a clever, guarded protector and a ruler who believes doing the right thing is worth the risk.
