Series background & context

The Bifrost Guardians is Mickey Zucker Reichert's early blend of portal fantasy, military experience, and Norse mythology. It begins with a modern American soldier and quickly opens into a larger story about worlds connected by magic, gods who use mortals as pieces in their conflicts, and a small group trying to hold back Chaos.

In Godslayer, Al Larson is caught in a firefight in Vietnam when he is taken to another world. He wakes in an elvish body, far from anything he knows, where swords, spells, dragons, and Norse gods are frighteningly real. Freyr gives him a quest that leads toward Hel's realm, leaving Al little time to understand the rules of his new life before he has to survive them.

The series expands rather than staying with one hero. Shadow Climber introduces Taziar Medakan, a talented thief known for moving unseen through shadows. After betrayal puts him in a baron's dungeon, he teams up with the barbarian prince Moonbear to escape. Their flight draws them into the same larger magical conflict that has already transformed Al's life.

By Dragonrank Master, Al, Taziar, and the swordsman Gaelinar are part of an uneasy band of allies. They are pursued by Fenris Wolf and Hel, while the balance between Law and Chaos threatens to collapse. Their search for the legendary rod of Geirmagnus takes them through magical strongholds, Hel's dark domain, and even back toward war-torn Vietnam.

The later books make the group feel more like a found family, though nobody gets to settle down for long. In Shadow's Realm, Shadow answers a call for help from Shylar in his hometown of Cullinsberg, only to find a trap and a powerful Dragonmage driven mad by Chaos. By Chaos Cursed carries the consequences further, as the companions confront a threat that reaches across worlds and time.

The tone is adventurous and fast-moving, with quests, escapes, magical duels, and plenty of shifting alliances. It also asks what happens when people are pulled out of the lives they expected, then asked to take responsibility for a place that was never supposed to be theirs.

Start with Godslayer. The books introduce major characters one at a time, but the larger conflict and the relationships among the guardians build most clearly in publication order.
