Author bio
Nicky Charles became a novelist almost by accident. In January 2009 she wrote fanfiction for the old TV series Scarecrow and Mrs. King, got hooked on storytelling, and met fellow writer Jan Gordon through that fan community. Jan later nudged her to try an original story, which turned out to be exactly the push she needed.
Over the next couple of months she wrote Forever in Time, a suspense-driven romance she posted in August 2009. Not long after that came The Mating, which began as a short piece on FictionPress and quickly grew when readers kept asking for more. What started as a test run became the foundation of her best-known world.
That world is Law of the Lycans. It starts with The Mating, The Keeping, and The Finding, then widens through Bonded, Betrayed: Days of the Rogue, Betrayed: Book Two - The Road to Redemption, For the Good of All, and Deceit Can Be Deadly. The books mix arranged pairings, pack law, rogues, witches, fae, and overlapping story lines, but the emotional center is usually simple: duty pulls one way, love pulls the other.
Werewolves are clearly not a passing phase.
Charles has said that when she writes, she sees the story in her head like a movie. That helps explain why her books feel visual and physical. She pays attention to setting, body language, and the little sensory details that make a scene land, whether she is writing an Alpha handling pack politics or a heroine deciding who she can trust.
She also writes beyond wolves. With Jan Gordon, she created the Hearts and Halos series, beginning with In the Cards and Untried Heart. Those books trade pack politics for guardian angels and heavenly rules, but they keep her interest in loyalty, temptation, and relationships under pressure. It is a gentler corner of her bibliography, but it still runs on feeling and conflict.
For years Charles wrote around a full-time job, fitting stories into whatever off-hours she had. On her author pages she has been open about the fact that writing began as a hobby, and that her books were free for a long stretch before she started charging modest prices to help cover publishing costs and support a local animal shelter. That practical tone comes through in the way she talks to readers.
Cats seem to find their way into her life too.
Charles lives in Canada and has made a point of keeping Canadian spelling and punctuation in her work. She has also written about supporting animal shelters, nature conservancy, food banks, and other charities. When she is not writing, the details she shares are pleasantly grounded: gardening, day trips, time outdoors, favorite authors, and a serious appreciation for dark chocolate.
That mix of ordinary life and supernatural drama is part of what makes her books work. Even when the cast includes Alphas, witches, bears, or angels, the feelings stay close to home. Her stories are about connection, trust, second chances, and what happens when love crashes into rules that were never built to make life easy.
