Author bio
Nick Webb grew up in the Seattle area, and by his own telling he got into science because he wanted to build starships. The line is funny, but it is also a pretty fair summary of the road he took. Before he became known for military space opera, he studied physics, earned a Ph.D. in experimental physics in Utah, and built a career that mixed research, engineering, and a very practical interest in how space technology works.
He has lived in a handful of places along the way, including stretches in California, Argentina, Alabama, and Washington. He has also worked on projects connected to NASA, written proposals, and spent time building advanced materials with lasers. That background shows up in the novels, but not in a flashy way. His ships feel used, his battles have weight, and even the bigger science fiction ideas usually feel like somebody had to solve the hardware first.
Writing started as a side lane.
When Webb first began publishing fiction, he used the name Endi Webb, a phonetic version of his initials, N. D. Webb. He has said that the pen name also helped keep some distance between his scientific work and his novels at a time when he was doing more sensitive government work. Under that name he launched The Terran Gambit in 2014, a fast-moving story about Captain Jacob Mercer, a stolen warship, and a human rebellion trying to survive under an empire's rule.
Then the books found a much bigger audience.
That early success helped put Webb on the USA Today bestseller list, and it gave him room to keep building out the kinds of worlds he clearly loved spending time in. The Pax Humana Saga leans into rebel crews, political pressure, and the mess of fighting a stronger enemy without much margin for error. It also established one of Webb's recurring habits as a storyteller, putting capable but stressed people in impossible situations and forcing them to keep going anyway.
A lot of readers start with Constitution, and it is easy to see why. The first Legacy Fleet novel drops an aging captain, Tim Granger, onto an old battleship just as Earth faces the return of the Swarm. From there Webb built Warrior, Victory, Independence, and later books like Legend and Majestic, turning one desperate defense story into a long-running space war full of fleet action, recurring officers, and ugly decisions made under pressure.
He did not stay in just one sandbox. With Mercury's Bane and the Earth Dawning books, Webb moved closer to a near-future setup, with humanity driven out into the solar system and trying to claw its way home. Across the different series, some patterns keep coming back: battered crews, chain-of-command tension, alien threats, and the idea that clever technology helps, but character is what gets people through the fight. He also works outside novels, and more recently has served as a senior narrative designer for Disney Lorcana.
These days he lives in Seattle. The thread connecting all of it is simple: a physicist who wanted to build starships, a writer who did it on the page first, and a science fiction author who knows that the hardware is fun, but the people inside the ship are the real story.
